WOE IS AI
The Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has been denied a six-month visa to travel to London ahead of his September exhibition at London’s Royal Academy of Arts.
UPDATE: Ai Weiwei has been issues a 6-month visa by the British government, as well as an apology for the initial denial.
Earlier this week, Ai Weiwei announced via instagram that he had received his passport from the Chinese government, following his detainment and house arrest in 2012. The news was met with excitement among Ai’s fans and supporters and around the world, who tweeted their congratulations to him, and expressed the hope that the artist, who has at times been an outspoken critic of the Chinese government, might be able to travel to London on the occasion of his upcoming art exhibition there. However, such hopes appear to have been dashed, as the artist later announced that the British government denied his visa on the grounds of past criminal convictions.
