WEARABLE HIGH ART
Artist Ai Weiwei has designed a new line of jewelry for Elisabetta Cipriani.
Joining the ranks of artists like Enrico Castellani, Rebecca Horn, Tom Sachs, and others, Ai Weiwei has designed a collection of jewelry with Italy’s Elisabetta Cipriani.
Ai’s collection, “Rebar in Gold,” relates to his ongoing inquiry of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan Province, China, which killed approximately 70,000 people. Visiting the disaster site, Ai came across hundreds of tonnes of twisted steel rebar, which he purchased from scrapyards to create his work.
The collection features rebar made from 24 karat gold, flexible and individually bent by the artist, malleable by the the wearer.
