SAFE SOUNDS II
Safe Sounds II is a progressive and interactive sound installation, a tuneful structure of birdcages housing local birds known as ‘white-spectacled bulbuls’. The collaboration between Beirut Art Residency(BAR), a non-profit artist-run residency space in Gemmayze, and Lebanese video artist and photographer Ziad Antar, is an extension of Antar’s continuous investigation in sound and image.
The installation will be presented on June 20, at the BAR studio space, during which attendees will actively take part in Antar’s project by taking home one or more bulbuls in painted wooden cages. After nurturing the birds over the course of three months each participant will set their bulbul free in the neighborhood of Gemmayze, Beirut.
The ultimate aim of this community project is to permanently alter the soundscape of the city as once these songbirds are bred, their loyal nature will keep them nearby. The bulbul will return to its owner when it feels like it or perhaps it may never come back, instigating an unexpected element that is characteristic of Antar’s work.
