IN MEMORY OF OSCAR DE LA RENTA
Today the fashion world mourns the loss of Oscar de la Renta, who passed away yesterday at the age of 82.
Dominican-born de la Renta was trained by Cristóbal Balenciaga and Antonio del Castillo in the ’50s, and rose to fame a decade later when his timeless designs fell into favor with Jacqueline Kennedy. Over the years he became a fashion icon beloved by modern monarchs and red carpet royalty, and ended his career with a spectacular flourish: Amal Clooney’s elegant, enviable wedding dress.
After being treated for cancer in 2006, De la Renta said, “The only realities in life are that you are born, and that you die. We always think we are going to live forever… The one thing about having this kind of warning is how you appreciate every single day of life.”
