ICONA POP: EMERGENCY
Three years after the release of “I Love It,” the Swedish pop duo Icona Pop is back with “Emergency,” a song destined to be the soundtrack to the summer of 2015.
The video, which came out this week, contains all the basic ingredients for a summer night out: the music, the dance moves, the makeup pointers and the fashion. Oh, and an ambulance. And some body bags. Let’s break it down.
The music: It’s an infectious pop song of the sort we’ve come to expect from Icona Pop, but with some rambunctious jazz riffs that call to mind the cantina music in Star Wars. Icona Pop once said they want to make music that lets you laugh and cry at the same time, and this seems to be the case with “Emergency.” The lyrics are at times grandiose: “Girls hide your mans cuz I’m hot and I’m dancin’.” At other times, they’re desperate: “This is emergency call an ambulance come rescue me.” Did we mention the video opens with the ladies being unzipped from body bags?
The moves: A modern twist on the Charleston, alternating with the classic dance move where you mime-slap your best friend’s behind repeatedly.
The makeup: Red lips and lots of eyeliner, an update of the 1920s silent movie starlet look. In some of the cuts one of the singers even wears chola lipliner, which you, too, can try if you’re feeling daring.
The outfits: In the video, the Swedish duo is pictured wearing matching black alligator-skin outfits, and black and white spats, bright red lipstick and eyeliner. They’re later shown wearing gold bondage outfits reminiscent of a Lady Gaga video, which makes sense – director Christian Larson previously worked on the video for Lady Gaga’s “Telephone.”
