HIDDEN LIFE WITHIN
Giuseppe Penone’s sculptures search for the secret life within all things.
Italian artist Giuseppe Penone was born in 1947 and became affiliated with the Arte Povera movement of the 1960s. Like many of his peers, he explored mankind’s relationship with nature, and employed simple materials such as wood, stone, resin and leather to do so. Some of his work has included carving small trees out of a larger tree trunk to show the progression. According to the artist, “My artwork shows, with the language of sculpture, the essence of matter and tries to reveal with the work, the hidden life within.”
Giuseppe Penone’s work is on view as part of the New Skin exhibition at the Aïshti Foundation, Jal el Dib.
