This season, men’s fashion is a collision of toddler-like exuberance and cranky grandpa style that was Hunter S. Thompson’s trademark.
The father of Gonzo journalism has inspired many a boozehound/ aspiring writer since the 1960s. Johnny Depp even played him in film adaptations of Thompson’s epic Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and The Rum Diary (the actor and writer even struck up a friendship before Thompson’s 2005 suicide; Depp described it as ‘a major love affair.’)
To get the Hunter S. Thompson look, aviator frames are a must, but so are wacky prints on shirts and blazers, a hat (cowboy, bucket, or visor), white sneakers, and even shorts with tube socks. Of course, Hunter S. Thompson got away with it because he got away with anything — he survived Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and a beat-down from the Hell’s Angels. To truly pull of the Hunter S. Thompson look, the most important component is an irreverent attitude. And a typewriter.
And some hallucinogens, too, if you want to get technical.
