FIVE WAYS TO GET THE RIGHT FESTIVE HAIRSTYLE
Urban Retreat Creative Director Andrew Barton shows us how to get our hair ready for the holidays – awards season style.
Here at Aïshti, we don’t settle for less than perfect so we got the pro to give us the good stuff. Voted London’s Best Hairdresser by Tatler magazine, Andrew Barton is one of the UK’s most celebrated hairdressers, and as Creative Director of Urban Retreat at Harrods, he’s worked with countless celebrities. He walks us through his tips, tricks, and secrets for the most glamorously groomed hair this holiday season – just the right checklist for this journalist who just so happens to cut her own hair.
“The festive season is the time to pamper and prepare your hair for all of the glittering events and social gatherings. Hair is the one outfit we never take off so it needs to look its very best,” Barton explains.
Getting the right cut is the foundation for all hair styling. Serums can help disguise tired, dry and split ends, but the best recipe for gorgeously groomed hair is to get those ends snipped. It’s true that different hair textures react in different ways, but don’t underestimate how the new haircut of the season can make you feel energised and alive.
The fringe is a catwalk favourite this season. It can hide a multitude of sins and can be very sexy, an instant way of bringing an old-style bang up to date. Fringes come in all shapes and sizes, and any true rock chick wouldn’t be seen without a “too cool for school” eyelash tickler.
Conditioning is essential. A conditioner works by smoothing the outer layers on the hair cuticle and therefore avoids tangling, which can create breakage. Conditioners also align the cuticle scales and therefore make hair feel softer to the touch and encourage shine. It’s a myth that conditioner weighs down the hair, and our expert team has a menu of deep conditioning hair treatments that range from gel masks to rich crème treatments and power dose shots from luxury brands like Kérastase.
Hair colour is the fountain of youth and the ultimate grooming tool, perfect for banishing wiry, grey roots or adding instant glamour through sun-kissed highlights. Just a few woven threads around the face can brighten the skin and give vitality to even the dullest locks – just like a dab of mascara can bring an eye to life. Over the festivities you’ll be seeing so many old friends, family and neighbours, and the last thing you need is to worry about unsightly roots. It’s bang on trend this season as not only a beauty regime but also a fashion statement.
The trick to great grooming and hair styling is to embrace some of your hair’s natural texture (or personality) and enhance the rest. You can fry your hair into all kinds of submission but what’s essential is that you always use styling products to seal and protect your hair, from the humble mousse to the latest in nourishing oil technology. Styling products not only help add heat protection, they also help ensure a style lasts longer and gets the hair to shine.
Andrew Barton will be at Urban Retreat at Aïshti by the Sea on December 12, 13 and 14. It’s the busiest time of the year so book your hair appointments well in advance by calling 04 711 940.
