FACE MASK CHIC
Protective face masks are becoming a necessity, but that doesn’t mean they need to be ugly. Let’s face it, crap weather and air pollution isn’t going anywhere. And even in Beirut people have begun wearing face masks regularly; at first, to protect against the stench and fumes from piled-up garbage, and for the past few days, to protect against the historically terrible sand storm. But rather than stick with the plain blue surgical mask, why not make your surgical mask part of your outfit?
After all, something that covers that much of your face should probably look cute. Which is why in places where protective face masks are the most popular — cities like Tokyo and Seoul — true fashionistas make sure to make a statement. (Katy Perry donned a furry one in an homage to Japanese street style).
For the challenge of creating the next generation of truly fashionable face masks, we nominate Alexander Wang and Alexander McQueen. Both houses have employed face masks in the past, and would be well-suited to the job of creating something practical, functional and a little bit creepy — just the look we’re going for.
