ART THAT POPS
A look at Italian artist Agostino Bonalumi, whose 3-dimensional work is on view at the Aïshti Foundation.
Born near Milan in 1935, Agostino Bonalumi was a major figure in the Italian avant-garde with strong ties to the German art scene. Under the guidance of his mentor, Lucio Fontana, Bonalumi pioneered what he called the painting-object (‘pittura – oggetto’) and “extroflexions” wherein he used complex stretchers to mold the monochromatic canvases, creating the visual impression of a force pushing out from the painting. He later expanded his work to include metals and large-scale installations. He died in Milan in 2013.
New Skin now on view at the Aïshti Foundation in Jal el Dib.
